Wednesday: Mercy

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you … in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

God of grace, even when we feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn, we know that you are working, bringing hope and healing out of the rubble. Help us to remember this always. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as these verses from the Bible are read aloud.

Acts 16:27-32
When the jailer woke up and saw that the doors were open, he thought that the prisoners had escaped. He pulled out his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! No one has escaped.” The jailer asked for a torch and went into the jail. He was shaking all over as he knelt down in front of Paul and Silas. After he had led them out of the jail, he asked, “What must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Have faith in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved! This is also true for everyone who lives in your home.” Then Paul and Silas told him and everyone else in his house about the Lord. (CEV)

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: Why was the jailer frightened? What did Paul and Silas do for him?

Child: Have you ever felt scared at night? How does trusting God help you to feel better?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Almighty God, sometimes we find ourselves in frightening situations. Yet we know that you will lead us through them if only we trust you. Give us the words we need, so that we may comfort others who are going through hard times of their own. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you be ready to share your faith when the time calls for it. Amen.

Wednesday: Mercy

Pray:  Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty God, you are merciful and kind, and we love you! Stir up your Holy Spirit in us today as we read our Bible story. Help us to learn, and grow, and know more of you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Listen: Pay close attention as these verses from the Bible are read aloud.

Luke 23:18-21
But the whole crowd shouted, “Kill Jesus! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was in jail because he had started a riot in the city and had murdered someone. Pilate wanted to set Jesus free, so he spoke again to the crowds. But they kept shouting, “Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!” (CEV)

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: Why do you think the crowd wanted to free a murderer instead of Jesus? Were they showing mercy to Jesus?

Child: Have you ever been in a group of people and felt pressured to go along with something? When?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

God of grace, we sin every day, yet when we turn to you, you show your mercy forgive us. Help us to show mercy by treat people kindly, even if that means going against the crowd. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you look to God for strength and guidance! Amen.
