Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, teach us to worship you alone, and to show compassion to those around us who do not yet know you. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, we pray. Amen.

Listen:  Listen carefully as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

Paul taught about the one true God,
But many people thought him odd.
He said, “Those idols that you make,
They are not real; they’re just a fake.”

This made the craftsmen very mad,
Their business started going bad.
“Our god is Artemis,” they called,
“It’s time to put a stop to Paul!”

The people there began to riot,
Others told them to be quiet:
“You must quickly stop this fuss,
Or it will all be blamed on us!”

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: Paul was visiting a place where people worshipped many gods. What would you do if you were in his shoes? Would you be able to teach others about the one, true God? Why or why not?

Child: When people don’t believe us when we speak the truth, should we just tell them what they want to hear to get along? Why or why not?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, we want to point others to you, but it can be hard to speak up. Show us how to do this. Lead us, as you did for Paul. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you reach out to those who don’t know God. Amen.
