Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, we live in a world of people who are struggling and hurting. Let us be people who do not hurt others, but help them in all their needs, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

Saul was quite an angry man
He had a very rotten plan:
Find the Christians, make them wail,
Throw them, one and all, in jail!

But the Lord had other plans.
Jesus came to change the man.
“Saul,” he said, “Now that’s enough!
You have simply been too rough!”

Saul was shaken, but he knew,
Just what he should start to do:
Help the Christians, after all!
And from that day his name was “Paul.”

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: Was there a time when God changed your heart, and you started to act differently?

Child: Why do you think God chose a man who was his enemy, to become one of his most faithful apostles?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, we thank you for the love and compassion that you have shown to us, even though we don’t deserve it. Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to change our hearts so that we would trust and believe in you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May the Holy Spirit give you the compassion to serve in Jesus’ name. Amen.
