Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty Father, you are loving and kind. Thank you for helping us every day in so many different ways. Be with us now as we talk about our Bible story, and teach us all that you would have us know. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Pay close attention as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

Jesus said to those who’d hear,
“Listen friends, my words are clear:
Love your enemies. Do good.
Do the things you know you should.”

“Pray for those who are unkind.
(Do not let them rule your mind!)
Rise above and find a way
To show mercy every day.”

“Treat all people that you meet
From your home or school or street
As you’d like them to treat you.
That’s what God wants us to do!”

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: How has God shown kindness to you? In what way can God’s love help you be kind to others—even those you may not like?

Child: Have you ever prayed for someone who was mean to you? How did that affect you? Do you think you could give that a try?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Lord Jesus, you understand what it’s like to be treated badly, as you suffered at the hands of others, yourself. Help us be able to forgive people when we need to do that, and to find freedom by letting go of grudges. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you let go of past hurts and trust God with your future. Amen.
