Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.
From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O God, as we settle in and read from the Small Catechism today, help us to understand it better. Open our minds, so that we may learn all that you want us to know. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
Listen: Pay close attention to this reminder from Luther’s Small Catechism.
What is Holy Communion? It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, given to us Christians to eat and drink, as it was instituted by Christ himself. (Luther’s Small Catechism)
Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.
Child: When and where did you first receive Holy Communion? Tell us about that.
Child: How does receiving Communion make you feel? What is happening?
Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.
Heavenly Father, you give us many gifts, including Holy Communion. Thank you for forgiving our sins when we receive Communion, and for welcoming us into the family of faith. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.
May your sins be forgiven—in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit! Amen.
