Holy Family Time: August 31st

Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, when we are treated unfairly, give us patience. Let us look to Jesus as our example of how to treat our enemies. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Listen:  Listen carefully as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

Paul and Silas came to town;
A slave girl followed them around.
She kept yelling — all could hear it.
Paul drove out the evil spirit.

Her masters took and had them beat,
Held and locked up by the feet.
God then sent a huge earthquake,
Making bars and doors to shake.

The jailer thought they all escaped,
His life, he was about to take,
When Paul said, “No! We all are here!”
The jailer did not have to fear.

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: Why did Paul and Silas treat their jailer well? Do you think this was easy or hard for them?

Child:  When have you been kind to someone who didn’t expect it? What happened?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, help us to be kind to the people around us, even if we are on opposite sides. Give us wisdom, so we can act out of love rather than fear, like Paul and Silas did. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you see each person you meet as a child of God. Amen.
