Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Almighty Father, your love and mercy have no bounds. As we read the story today, inspire in us compassionate hearts, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

Those who followed Jesus Christ
were quite generous and nice;
Every day, they tried to meet
in each other’s homes to eat.

Just to help the ministry,
they would sell their property!
Sharing everything they had
made them feel extremely glad.

Meeting in the temple, too,
they invited all they knew.
For they wanted all to know
that the Lord God loved them so!

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: In what way do all Christians have a ministry to serve others?

Child: What are some of the ways that you like to show your love of God by helping your neighbors?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Loving God, you fill us with your love and compassion so that we might love one another as you have first loved us. Help us to treat others as we would like to be treated. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you always find ways to help and serve. Amen.

Wednesday: Mercy

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you … in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, you make us a part of the Church so we can learn and grow in your Word. Fill us with your Spirit as we listen to the Bible, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as these verses from the Bible are read aloud.

Acts 2:46-47
Day after day they met together in the temple. They broke bread together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely, while praising God. Everyone liked them, and each day the Lord added to their group others who were being saved. (CEV)

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: What does it mean to “break bread” together? Why is that something we often do in church?

Child:  Who are some of the friends you have in Church? What do you like about them?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Loving God, you call us together as the Church, and give us other people to serve beside and worship with. Strengthen our community of believers that more and more people would come to know your son through us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

God made you to be a blessing to others. Amen.

Child: Do we need to see miracles in order to believe in God?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, we know that you have the power to do amazing things, but our faith rests in your Word. Open our eyes to see the big things and the small things you do for us each day, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you experience the amazing goodness of God at work in your life. Amen.

Heavenly Father, you call us to trust and obey you. As we read your Word we pray that you would work in us through your Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as the Bible story for the week is read aloud.

Acts 2:42-47
[The new believers] spent their time learning from the apostles, and they were like family to each other. They also broke bread and prayed together. Everyone was amazed by the many miracles and wonders that the apostles worked. All the Lord’s followers often met together, and they shared everything they had. They would sell their property and possessions and give the money to whoever needed it. Day after day they met together in the temple. They broke bread together in different homes and shared their food happily and freely, while praising God. Everyone liked them, and each day the Lord added to their group others who were being saved. (CEV)

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: The Bible says that the first Christians were like a family to each other: What are things that family members are supposed to do for each other?

Child: When have you experienced the Church as a family of faith?

Affirm:  Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, just as the early Christians gathered together to learn and serve, guide us as we work alongside our fellow church members to learn more about you and to serve the world you love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words:

May the Lord God almighty watch over you in your going out and in your coming in. Amen.

Lord God, you are the source of all mercy. Open our ears that we may hear your promise and praise your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen:  Listen carefully as these verses from the Bible are read aloud.

Lord God, teach me your ways so that I might share them with others. Give me confidence to speak your name and to tell others of your wondrous love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

Saturday: Generosity

Pray:  Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you … in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, help us see that you are at work in us. Make us generous with all that we have, knowing you have given us all we need for the day. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully to this reminder from Luther’s Small Catechism.

I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him; but the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in the true faith. In the same way, he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and preserves it in unity with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.  (Luther's Small Catechism)

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: What does it mean that “the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel”? What is God calling on us to do?

Child: If God is the one who gives us faith, how can we help pass that gift of faith to others?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, by the power of your Holy Spirit you give us faith. Remind us that there is nothing we do to earn your love or gain salvation but you are the one who makes us your own. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

Go now in faith, trusting that God will give you all you need. Amen.

Friday: Trust

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord God, you have done amazing things for us and we praise your name. Open our hearts to hear your Word so that it would give us a deeper faith and trust in you, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Listen: Listen carefully as these verses from the Bible are read aloud.

Acts 2:2-4
On the day of Pentecost all the Lord’s followers were together in one place. Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind! It filled the house where they were meeting. Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there. The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: What do you think the Bible means when it says: “the Holy Spirit took control of everyone”?

Child: When have you felt the Holy Spirit move you to do something good for others?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Almighty God, fill us with the power of your Holy Spirit, just as you did with your first disciples. Help us to listen to your Word so that we make speak your message to others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you know that God is trustworthy and true, and he is always there for you. Amen.
