Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.
From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Dear God, today as we discuss our Bible story, please help us to understand it better. Teach us what you would have us know, and make us into kind and compassionate people. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Listen: Pay close attention as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.
Ol’ Pilate was the man in charge;
His Roman army was quite large!
They brought him Jesus to be tried;
The people wanted Christ to die.
So Pilate sentenced him to death;
And ordered whips to beat him with;
Upon a cross they nailed him, too,
And hailed him as, “The King of Jews.”
Above his head, that name they wrote;
They even gambled for his coat!
His closest friends all turned aside
On that sad day when Jesus died.
Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.
Child: Why do you think Jesus’ friends turned away from him? Do you imagine they regretted that later?
Child: Have you ever had friends turn away from you? How did you cope with that?
Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.
Holy God, despite the fact that people did not show compassion for your Son, you still care for us. How can that be? Perhaps it is because you are God—and we are not. Help us to see this more clearly each day, and to grow in love for you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.
May you know that God is always there for you! Amen.
