Thursday: Compassion

Pray: Begin by making the sign of the cross and calling upon God’s name.

From God to us, from death to life, from me to you …
in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Holy God, you never stop showing us your love. Thank you for your kindness and compassion. Teach us all that you would have us know today. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Listen: Pay close attention as the Bible story is read in the form of a rhyme.

In the temple, Paul did pray,
With the people there one day,
But a group got quite upset
And they yelled at Paul with threats.

“Help!” They hollered, “Get him out!”
And they pushed him with a shout.
Why did they not let him speak?
They believed he’d welcomed Greeks!

Thinking Paul had brought disgrace
They all dragged him from that place.
Then some soldiers stopped the brawl
By arresting faithful Paul.

Engage: Talk about the Bible by having parents respond to children’s questions.

Child: People got upset because they believed all sorts of rumors and false stories about Paul. What should we do when we hear bad rumors about other people? Why?

Child: Has anyone ever told a false story about you? How did you handle it? What did you learn from that situation?

Affirm: Pray for God to put his Word into action in your daily life.

Holy God, lead us today. When we hear rumors about people, keep us from passing those on or assuming they are true. Help us to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Have each person in the family bless one another with these words.

May you stand up for those who have no voice. Amen.
